When a tooth has a cavity, Dr. Dan will determine what kind of restoration can be placed. If the cavity is small enough, a filling can be placed. The cavity is removed, leaving a hole, and that hole is replaced with a “filling”.
There are two main types of fillings: composite, or white fillings and amalgam, or silver fillings. Composite fillings are tooth colored that can be matched to many different shades of teeth. These fillings have become the standard material to restore teeth that need fillings. After the cavity is removed, the tooth is treated with a bonding agent, which bonds the composite to the tooth. The composite is then cured with a blue light, and the filling sets. Unlike silver fillings which take 24-48 hours to fully set, the composite filling will be fully set when you leave the office, allowing you to eat and drink as you normally would.
