Post-Op Care for Dental Implants

After implant placement there is typically minimal discomfort. Bone, which the implant is placed in does not have nerve fibers, so while the healing process is starting, there is minimal discomfort. However, there are some precautions that are recommended:

  • Tylenol and Ibuprofen can be taken as needed for pain, which is typically minimal but it is not uncommon for minor discomfort.
  • The area is typically sutured after the implant is placed, and this area can bleed or ooze for up to three days. As needed, apply pressure with gauze to help stop the bleeding.
  • As with an extraction, you will want to rinse with warm salt water to help keep the area clean. Take ½ teaspoon of salt and a cup of warm water and rinse with it 3-4 times a day.
  • The day of implant placement a softer diet is recommended, avoiding overly hot foods as well as sharp foods (chips, nuts, pretzels). After the first day it is recommended to start eating normally as tolerated, the better nutrition, the easier it is for the body to start healing.
  • You will want to avoid heavy lifting or exercise the first 24-48 hours after implant placement, too strenuous of work can cause the area to start bleeding again.
  • Smoking can slow the healing process and should be avoided for 3 days after surgery.
